This word sort can be used in any lower and upper elementary classroom. It is a fun activity for centers, independent work, or work with an aide in an ELL/ESL program or emerging literacy small group. List the words from the key on the board, project them on a Smartboard, or copy a list off for each group or child. The students must write each word in the appropriate section on the blank template. You can also copy off the key, cut out the words, and have the student(s) glue them on to their blank template. To differentiate instruction and provide a challenge, leave off a word for each of the sections and have the student(s) provide their own word that would fit into each category. Pictures can also be used instead of words if that would support your particular learning environment.
